Mr. Anderson’s career integrates urban planning policy, real estate economics, redevelopment, and economic development. The Mayor of San Diego appointed Mr. Anderson as the Director the newly structured City Planning & Community Investment Department (CPCI) which includes four divisions – Planning, Redevelopment, Economic Development, and Urban Form, plus San Diego’s Public Facilities Financing Group. In this capacity, he also serves on the boards of SANGIS and the Public Facilities Financing Authority.

Prior to joining the City of San Diego, Mr. Anderson was a Senior Vice-President with Economics Research Associates (ERA), an international planning, development, and recreation economics consulting firm, where he completed over 350 assignments in nineteen states and eight countries from ERA’s Boston, Los Angeles, and San Diego offices. Mr. Anderson assessed the market, economic, and financial feasibility of development projects, ranging from small infill developments in inner cities to large-scale land developments and new towns, and provided economic analysis support for public-sector urban plans, economic development strategies, and land-use policies.

Mr. Anderson was a member of the San Diego Planning Commission from 1995 to 2003, serving as Chair from 2001 to 2003. He also served on the board of the San Diego/Tijuana District Council of the Urban Land Institute, the Board of the San Diego Chapter of the American Planning Association, and as President of Citizens Coordinate for Century 3, a San Diego conservation and planning advocacy group.

In 2006, Mr. Anderson was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He currently serves as Chair of the American Planning Association’s Economic Development Division, and is a member of the California Planners Roundtable, the Urban Land Institute’s Inner City Council, the Lambda Alpha land economics honorary society, and other related organizations.

Mr. Anderson received his BA from Claremont McKenna College in economics and political science, including coursework at the University of Copenhagen, and his Masters in City and Regional Planning from Harvard University.
