Completion and Operation of the thermo-chemical water splitting sulfur iodine process in a lab scale plant for a continuous hydrogen production

Abstract:

The ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development) with the majors Italian Universities, within the framework of the national founded project TEPSI (Innovative Technologies and Processes for the Transition to the Future Hydrogen System) is involved in a research investigation on thermochemical hydrogen production by means of the Sulphur-Iodine (SI) water-splitting cycle. ENEA’s activity in this frame covers several fields including the evaluation of structural materials in corrosion environments, the improvement of the thermal efficiency, and other operative options. One of the most important target in the TEPSI, is the accomplishment of a bench scale flow loop to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of the whole SI closed cycle. After deep studies and various preliminary experimental examinations of the whole process section by section, reaction by reaction, a flow sheet has been carried out with a basic molar flow rate fixed with the aim to design the singles apparatus. Finally a plant using mainly glass devices has been completed and operated in different conditions demonstrating some way controllability. In the experiment, hydrogen production was successfully accomplished at rate of 10 l/h to 20 l/h for more than 20 h. After this, automation and control of the process is one of the future challenges.
