A novel class of fullerene derivatives as electron acceptors in organic solar cells

After 15 years since it was first synthesized, PCBM ([6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester) is still the most popular and successful acceptor and dominates the scene of Bulk Heterojunction solar cells. Additionally, most of the fullerene derivatives employed in this field are based on the 1,2 addition chemistry, limiting the range of new materials that can be studied. We herein introduce a new repertoire of C60 derivatives functionalized via 1,4 addition reactions. Interestingly, the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is dramatically altered and that consequently increases the open circuit voltage of the device. The synthesis and properties of these new materials, morphology of the films and fabrication of the solar cells as well as their photo current efficiency are discussed
