Hedi Mattoussi has been a professor at the Florida State University, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since August 2009. Prior to that, he spent 12 years working as a senior Research Scientist at the US Naval Research Laboratory (Washington, DC). He received a bachelor in Physics from the Faculty of Sciences in Tunis. He then went on a fellowship to Paris where he earned a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Pierre & Marie Curie (Paris VI) in 1987. In 1994, he received a Habilitation to direct Research, Materials Physics, also from Paris VI. His research experiences include postdoctoral stays at the Polymer Science Department, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and at MIT, Center for Materials Science. He presently focuses on the development of inorganic nanoparticles (including semiconductor QDs and metallic nanocrystals), their structural and optical characterization, and the development of effective schemes to promote their transfer to aqueous media, and the design of effective coupling chemistries to interface them with biological receptors, and the use of those materials in sensor development and live cell imaging. More recently, his group has been exploring means of promoting intracellular uptake of various platforms via non-endocytotic pathways. They have also expanded their effort to focus on the design of various fluorescent metal clusters such as those made of Au and Ag, and to develop novel photochemical approach for surface modification and phase transfer of QDs.
