A major avenue of investigation in the Broome laboratory is to develop a diagnostic imaging paradigm that will allow the detection and imaging of multiple over-expressed disease targets at the same time. We are expanding this avenue of reach by identifying suitable, imageable proteins and deconstructing them into multiple complementing subunits. This technology will significantly increase sensitivity and specificity for detecting disease markers and will pave the way for the development of tools able to image non-invasively complex molecular signatures of disease. Use of these conjugates, therefore, may offer more precise and efficient detection of complex molecular signature populations in cancer and hyperproliferative diseases and may ultimately be a key to the future development and establishment of target-based therapies.

Another research thrust is on the regulatory pathways responsible for maintenance of normal skin homeostasis and the dysregulation that occurs in these pathways with regard to tumorigenesis and hyperproliferative diseases. Of particular interest are the intracellular signaling pathways implicated in inflammation and wound healing. These mechanisms mediate the cytokine-dependent increase of chemotactic proteins, such as the S100 proteins, in inflamed skin and may be manipulated to control epidermal disease.
