Technologies & Systems Approaches Towards Interrogating the Paradoxical Relationship between Cancer and the Immune System

Keywords: Cancer, immune disease

Abstract:

The human immune system has a complex relationship with cancer. On the one hand, it constitutes one of the most powerful weapons for battling the disease. On the other hand, many of the hallmarks of cancer, such as angiogenesis and metastasis, are thought to arise out of a process in which the immune system actually reinforces the aberrant nature of cancer. In this talk, I will discuss work related to both of these issues. I will present technolologies aimed at uraveling this relationship, with applications towards understanding the tumor microenvironment of glioblastoma multiforme cancers, as well as towards assessing the functional status of the immune system in melanoma cancer patients participating in an adoptive T-cell transfer immunotherapy trial. The nature of these problems dictate the need for multiplexed, functional analysis at the single cell level, and the development and application of technologies designed for this purpose will be presented.
