Multifunctional Nanoparticles for Imaging and Therapeutics (invited presentation)

Abstract:

Metal and semiconductor nanoparticles in the 1-10 nm size range are of considerable current interest, not only because of their unique size dependent properties but also their dimensional similarities with biological macromolecules (e.g., nucleic acids and proteins). These similarities could allow an integration of nanotechnology and biology, leading to major advances in medical diagnostics, prognostics, and targeted therapeutics. In this talk, I present recent development of multifunctional nanostructures for multimodality imaging and controlled drug delivery. plasmonic activities in a single nanoparticle by controlling the spacing between a quantum dot core and an ultrathin gold shell with nanometer precision through layer-by-layer assembly. This wet-chemistry approach provides a general route for the deposition of ultrathin gold layers onto a variety of discrete nanostructure, and is useful for multimodal bioimaging and drug delivery.
