Fluorophore Interactions with Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract:

The effect that metal nanoparticles have on a fluorophor in its vicinity has become a point of interest in nanophotonics. Published data is somewhat contradictory and the experimental approaches are not always comparable. This apparent contradiction arises partially from the simultaneous effects on the radiative (kr) and non-radiative (knr) rate constants and the additional effect of enhancement of light field at the AuNP surface. On the other hand, the difficulty in assessing the fluorophore the real values of kr and knr has been posed mainly by the nanoparticles scattered light, inner filter and re-absorption effects. We present the photophysical characterization of a fluorophore at the surface of nanoparticles via the independent determination of fluorescence quantum yield and lifetimes, which allow determination of kr and knr without theoretical assumptions or corrections. We determined the kr and knr to increase by ten-fold and hundred-fold, respectively, when a fluorophore is bonded to a nanoparticle when compared to a non-bonded fluorophore.
