Aptamer Conjugated Magnetic Nanoparticles as Nano-surgeons

Abstract:

Engineered nanomaterials and self assembling nanostructures hold a great promise in tumor targeted drug delivery due to their plausible advantages: small size, surface modification capability, immunostability etc. Among the various engineered nanostructures, magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) seize a distinctive position in nano medicine realm due to their ability to undergo surface modification and their competency to move in cellular level by an external magnetic field. Rotational magnetic field, could hasten cluster formation and rotation of magnetic colloidal particles towards the field of rotation, generated the tumbling motion of magnetic particles on a magnetic substrate. Here we describe a method to target Glioma cells and manipulate them in a rotating external magnetic field using an aptamer conjugated paramagnetic nanoparticles (APTAMAG). We study the in vivo application of APTAMAG for moving and tearing off the cancer cells on a pretreated cover slip. Our studies, for the first time, report the selective manipulation of Glioma cells without altering the normal cell population in a mixed culture of cells.
